Tim Wellens (born May 10, 1991 in Sint-Truiden ) is a Belgian racing cyclist .

Career

Wellens, whose father Leo Wellens , brother Yannick Wellens and his two uncles Johan and Paul Wellens were also cyclists, initially devoted himself to mountain bike races and became Belgian junior cross country champion in 2008

In 2012 he joined the road cycling Lotto Belisol U23 , the farm team of the UCI ProTeam Lotto-Belisol , with which he received a contract from July 2012. From 2014 onwards he won races for this team in the UCI WorldTour : He won the overall ranking of the Eneco Tour 2014 and was able to repeat this success in 2015 . Also in 2015 he won the one-day race Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal in a two-man sprint ahead of Adam Yates . In 2016 he won stages at Paris-Nice and the Giro d'Italia , the latter as a solo winner of a mountain finish . Then he won another race of the UCI WorldTour with the overall ranking of the Tour of Poland .

At the beginning of 2017, Wellens won a few smaller races. He gave up the subsequent Tour de France 2017 after he was weakened by an allergy . He refused a treatment with a drug that is listed as a doping agent , which is permitted by way of a therapeutic use exemption . At the end of the season, the Belgian won the overall standings and the 4th stage of the Tour of Guangxi .

In 2018 Wellens repeated the victory of the Trofeo Serra de Tramuntana . He also won a stage and the overall classification of the Tour of Andalusia and also won the points classification from Paris-Nice . The Belgian also won the Brabant Arrow and won stage 4 at the Giro d'Italia .

Miscellaneous

In October 2018, Wellens and his teammate Thomas De Gendt caused a stir when the two cyclists decided to cycle back to Belgium after the last big race of the season, the Tour of Lombardy . They needed six days for the 1000 kilometer tour under the motto “The Final Breakaway”.
