Thomas De Gendt (born November 6, 1986 in Sint-Niklaas ) is a Belgian racing cyclist who mostly achieves his success through attempts to break away.
Career
De Gendt began his international career in 2006 with the UCI Continental Team Unibet-Davo . In the Thuringia Tour he was able to win a stage and thus his first international race in the U23 area. In 2008 he won the Grand Prix Waregem its first international elite one-day races and the championship of the Triptyque des Monts et Châteaux its first international elite stage race .
From the 2011 season, de Gendt received his first contract with a UCI ProTeam , the Dutch team Vacansoleil-DCM . That year he also won his first UCI ProTour race, a stage from Paris – Nice . He succeeded in doing this again in 2012 . At the Giro d'Italia 2012 he won the queen stage as a soloist with the mountain finish on the Stilfser Joch and was third in the overall ranking.
In 2013, de Gendt won another UCI WorldTour competition with a stage in the Volta a Catalunya . At the Vuelta a España 2013 , he was disqualified for prohibited slipstream driving on the 10th stage.
After less successful years in 2014 and 2015 ( mountain classification winner in Paris – Nice 2015 ), he won the 12th stage of the 2016 Tour de France on Mont Ventoux . With his victory in the 19th stage at the Vuelta a España 2017 , he won all Grand Tours stages. De Gendt also won a stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2017
In 2018 De Gendt again won a stage of the Tour of Catalonia and a stage of the Tour de Romandie , in which he won the mountain and points classification . He was also able to win the mountain classification at Paris – Nice and the Vuelta a España .
After De Gendt won the mountain classification from Paris-Nice and a stage of the Tour of Catalonia and its mountain classification in the spring of the 2019 season, he started in all Grand Tours and was able to finish all three tours. His greatest success was the stage win on the 8th stage of the Tour de France , which he won as an outlier.
Miscellaneous
In October 2018, De Gendt and his teammate Tim Wellens caused a sensation when the two cyclists decided to cycle back to Belgium after the last big race of the season, the Tour of Lombardy . They needed six days for the 1000 kilometer tour under the motto “The Final Breakaway”.
