Tour of Catalonia
The Tour of Catalonia ( Volta Ciclista a Catalunya ) is a stage race in Catalonia, Spain . The tour, originally held in May / June and since 2011 in March, has been part of the newly created UCI ProTour since 2005 , a series of the most important cycling races of the year. Since 2011 the race has been part of the successor series UCI WorldTour .
The Tour of Catalonia was first held in 1911 and, along with the Tour of the Basque Country, is one of the most important regional stage races in Spain. The record winner of the race, which is still dominated by locals, is Mariano Cañardo with seven victories between 1928 and 1939.
Not to be confused with the Tour of Catalonia is the Setmana Catalana de Ciclisme (Catalan Week), which was held until 2005.
The 100th Tour of Catalonia in 2020 has been canceled due to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain . The anniversary edition should take place at the end of March 2021.
