KrasAir (actually Krasnoyarsk Airlines , Russian Красноярские авиалинии ) was a Russian airline based in Krasnoyarsk in Siberia . According to its own account, it was one of the three largest airlines in Russia. In 2001, KrasAir carried more than 1 million passengers for the first time. In 2008, KrasAir had to cease flight operations due to financial problems and several employee strikes.

history

KrasAir was established as Yenisey Air Wing in May 1934 on the instructions of the Northern Sea Route Headquarters . The name changed to Krasnoyarsk Civil Aviation Directorate (1946-1982) and Krasnoyarsk Aviation Enterprize (1982-1993). In 1993 the government privatized the company but still owned 51% of the shares. At that time, Krasnoyarsk Airlines was introduced as a new name . This name was then shortened to the brand name KrasAir in 1998 . The Krasnoyarsk Airlines was founded in 1993 as a private-sector corporation of the Krasnoyarsk Dependence of Aeroflot, which in turn goes back to the established in 1934 Yenisei Airwing. It has been operated under the brand name KrasAir since 1998 .

In October 2004 KrasAir and Domodedovo Airlines merged, but remained legally independent. The aim was to bundle administration and flight destinations, as these were almost the same.

AiRUnion

The company was led by twin brothers Boris and Alexander Michailowitsch Abramowitsch, who held a 40% stake in the airline. The government of the Krasnoyarsk Territory held 51%. In 2004 the company merged with the four other Russian airlines Domodedovo Airlines , Samara Airlines , Omskavia and Sibaviatrans of the Abramowitsch brothers to form the alliance AiRUnion . Since 2005, the KrasAir aircraft have been repainted in the colors of the AiRUnion. It became the third largest regional airline in Russia.

As part of its international expansion, AiRUnion took over a share of 99.95% in the Hungarian, previously state-owned, airline Malev for 200 million forints (approx. 758,000 euros).

In 2006 KrasAir transported 1.12 million passengers and AiRUnion a total of 3.42 million passengers.

In 2006, together with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development , KrasAir founded the low-cost airline Sky Express , which is based at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport .

Crisis in 2008

In June and August 2008, KrasAir and AiRUnion had to temporarily cease flight operations because the kerosene suppliers refused to refuel the aircraft due to insufficient payment. In June, KrasAir reached an agreement with the main supplier, Sibir Avia Service, to continue delivering kerosene as long as the debt did not exceed 100 million rubles (around EUR 2.75 million). But already in August the debt was around 6.1 million euros, so that flight operations had to be suspended for the second time, which meant that thousands of passengers could not take their flight. KrasAir cited the rising kerosene prices as the reason and reported that kerosene deliveries accounted for 54% of the costs in the first half of the year.

On August 26, 2008, Rostechnologii , one of the shareholders, declined to pay any further bills for KrasAir. At the same time, the state negotiated with Aeroflot , Transaero , S7 Airlines and Rossija to take over the former routes of KrasAir.

After employee strikes and ongoing debts with kerosene suppliers, KrasAir ceased operations on October 27, 2008. On November 1, 2008, the actual company was dissolved and the flight routes were placed under the administration of Atlant-Soyuz Airlines . Later, KrasAir, together with several other airlines, was to be merged to form Rosavia , which, however, never took place.

On July 6, 2009, it became known that KrasAir, under the leadership of Atlant-Soyuz Airlines, is insolvent and has filed for bankruptcy.

Destinations

In addition to domestic Russian destinations, KrasAir also served destinations in Germany (e.g. Frankfurt am Main and Hanover ), Austria ( Salzburg ), Ukraine , Turkey , Moldova , Greece , Cyprus , China and Thailand .
