Transaero Airlines Трансаэро ceased operations in 2015. The information in italics refer to the last status before the end of operation. |
Transaero Airlines ( Russian Трансаэро ) was a Russian airline based in Saint Petersburg and based at Moscow Domodedovo Airport . It was the second largest Russian airline after Aeroflot , but heavily indebted, which is why Aeroflot took over operational control on September 7, 2015. Flight operations ceased on October 26, 2015.
history
Transaero Airlines was founded in November 1991 as the first purely private Russian airline. As the first route Moscow - Tel Aviv was served with a borrowed machine. Starting in 1992, its own fleet was built, whereby the company, unlike other Russian providers, relied on Western aircraft from Boeing at an early stage . Nevertheless, Russian aircraft of the Tupolev Tu 204/214 family also flew at Transaero.
In 1995 it was the first foreign airline to fly to the city of Aqmola . Since 1996, Transaero has also operated long-haul intercontinental flights.
In 2001, Olga Pleschakova was appointed General Director of Transaero, the first woman in Russian history to head an airline. In 2006 the company went public on the Moscow Stock Exchange with a capitalization of 2.5 billion rubles .
In autumn 2011, Transaero signed a letter of intent to purchase four Airbus A380-800s and four Boeing 747-8Is ; the A380s were firmly ordered in January 2012.
According to its own information, Transaero has flown to almost 150 airports in 56 countries since 1991. The company primarily advertised its fleet, which largely consisted of western types of aircraft, and its on-board service. For example, it was also the first Russian airline with a frequent flyer program and its own airport lounges .
At the end of 2014, Transaero was on the brink of bankruptcy with debts of 4.5 billion rubles .
In the summer of 2015, two Airbus A380-800s should begin flight operations to New York and Vladivostok .
On September 3, 2015, the management of the state-owned Russian airline Aeroflot considered taking over 75% of the shares plus one share in Transaero for the symbolic price of one ruble. This approach was discussed on September 1, 2015 in the Kremlin with Vice Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov . This should ensure that the flight operations of the company would not be discontinued, which was now in debt with 67.6 billion rubles. Aeroflot took over operational control on September 7, 2015.
On October 1, 2015, Aeroflot's board of directors rejected the offer to acquire shares. On October 2, the Minister for Economic Development of the Russian Federation, Alexei Ulyukayev , described bankruptcy with around 3.4 billion euros in debt as the only possible solution.
On October 2, 2015, Transaero and Aeroflot announced the cessation of flight operations as of December 15, 2015, and reimbursement has been guaranteed for bookings of later flights. At the same time, bookings for Transaero flights were discontinued.
As of October 6, 2015, most of the international flights were no longer operated, at the same time a significant number of domestic flights were suspended. In the days that followed, numerous other national flights were canceled. Replacement transport is carried out by Aeroflot or, in individual cases, by other airlines.
The flights to Tel Aviv and Ho Chi Minh City as well as charter flights for the travel agency biblio-globus.ru were initially continued by Transaero, the latter should be operated by the Aeroflot subsidiary Orenair from October 25, 2015 .
On October 13, 2015, Aeroflot announced that it would take over 6000 and thus more than half of the employees of Transaero. The Siberian airline S7 Airlines had planned to buy 51 percent of the shares, but this deal did not materialize. On October 21, it was announced that Transaero would lose its flight license on October 26, 2015, so it had to cease flight operations.
In December 2015, an arbitration tribunal ruled Transaero's bankruptcy . Creditor banks and leasing companies filed claims against Transaero for 250 billion rubles.
Destinations
Transaero maintained around 30 scheduled flight connections, preferably within the Russian Federation and the Commonwealth of Independent States . Medium and long-haul flights led to Berlin , Frankfurt am Main , London , Lyon , Montreal , Munich , Tel Aviv and Vienna , for example .
Furthermore, were charter flights carried out with a focus on international destinations, such as regularly to Bangkok , Dubai , Antalya , in the Dominican Republic and to Singapore . In the winter season, for example, Transaero also flew to Friedrichshafen , Salzburg and Innsbruck to bring ski tourists to the Alps . For this purpose, wide-bodied aircraft were sometimes used.
Code sharing
Transaero had codeshare agreements with several companies , including Air Baltic , Austrian Airlines , Belavia , Virgin Atlantic and Singapore Airlines . Interline agreements existed with numerous other companies , including since November 2008 with Lufthansa .
