Mariano Cañardo
Mariano Cañardo Lacasta (born February 5, 1906 in Olite , † June 21, 1987 in Barcelona ) was a Spanish cyclist who was active from 1926 to 1943. He is a seven-time winner of the Tour of Catalonia .
Life and career
Cañardo grew up in Navarre , but was orphaned at the age of 14. Together with his sister he moved to Barcelona, where he soon came into contact with cycling. He was considered an excellent mountain and time trial driver and contested most of his races in his home country.
Already in his first year as a professional he drew attention to himself on the Tour of Catalonia, when he finished 3rd in the overall ranking. However, he was even more successful in the Tour of Cantabria , which he even won this year. In the following year he took 2nd place in the Tour of Catalonia and 3rd place in the Tour of Asturias , where he was able to decide one stage for himself.
In the Tour of the Basque Country in 1928 he came in third place, in the Tour of Asturias in second place and finally won the Tour of Catalonia for the first time. He was able to repeat the overall victory in 1929.
He also won the Tour of Catalonia in 1930, was also the Spanish road champion and also won the Tour of the Basque Country (ahead of Antonin Magne ). In 1931 he was again Spanish road champion, but had to be content with second place on the Tour of Catalonia.
He won the Tour of Catalonia in 1932 ahead of the Italian Domenico Piemontesi and also a few smaller races. At the Spanish road championship this year it was only enough for the runner-up. Outstanding result in 1933 was winning the Spanish road championship again.
In 1934 he came in 4th place in the Tour of Catalonia, probably in preparation for his first participation in the Tour de France . In all stages he was never worse than 25th place and thus finished 9th in the overall standings. At the Spanish road championship, he again achieved 2nd place.
In 1935 he took part in the Vuelta a España for the first time, won a stage and came in second place behind Gustaaf Deloor in the final result . Instead, he was able to win the Tour of Catalonia again and in the Spanish road cycling championship he is back in second place.
A particularly successful year was 1936. He won the Spanish road championship for the last time, came 10th in the Tour of Spain, won the Tour of Catalonia again and finished the Tour de France in 6th place. That was also his best result on the tour. In 1937 he won the Tour of Morocco, where he also won a stage. He also won a stage in the Tour de France this year, finishing 30th in the overall standings.
In 1938 he was also able to win the Tour of Morocco with 2 stage wins this time. In the Tour de France he came in 16th place. In 1939 there were 4 stage wins at the Circuito del Norte and the overall victory and he also won the Tour of Catalonia again. But the Spanish Civil War had an increasing impact on cycling. In 1940 he was third in the Spanish Road Championship and the Tour of Catalonia. In 1941 he was able to win another stage in this race and also in 1942 (but this time in the team time trial).
After finishing his active career, he became a successful sports director for various cycling teams , including the Spanish national cycling team with which he took part in the Tour de France from 1951 to 1953. He also appeared as race director of various Catalan cycling events. There were also some administrative activities, such as being President of the Catalan Cycling Federation from 1969–1974.
