The 28th Tour de France took place from July 3 to 29, 1934. The tour led over 4363 km and consisted of 23 stages. For the first time there was an individual time trial , the 90 kilometers from La Roche-sur-Yon - Nantes had to be covered individually. The impetus for the start of the time trial was that Desgranges was impressed by the success of the Grand Prix des Nationes race (which his competition had launched from the Paris-Soir newspaper ). Of the only 60 participants, 39 were classified.
Race course
Last year's winner, Georges Speicher , won the first stage . However, he was only able to look forward to the top rider's jersey for one day, because he had to give it up again after the next section: A second place was enough for Frenchman Antonin Magne to take over the yellow jersey on the second stage , while Speicher was behind 15 minutes to the finish.
Magne was able to defend his lead all the way to the finish in Paris, winning another stage and the first individual time trial in tour history. Speicher was able to look forward to a total of five stage wins. On the fifth stage from Belfort to Évian-les-Bains , however, it was so close that he had to share the victory with René Le Grevès .
The dominant team was the French team, which scored 19 stage wins, wore the yellow jersey from the first to the last stage and won the team championship with ease. In addition, the Frenchman René Vietto won the mountain classification.
For the first time, the winner achieved an average speed of over 30 km / h: Antonin Magne achieved an average speed of 30.360 km / h.
