Map of the Tour de France 1964

The 51st Tour de France took place from June 22nd to July 14th, 1964 and ran over 4,504 km on 22 stages. 132 cyclists in 12 teams took part in the tour , 81 of which were classified.

Race course

After his victory in the fourth stage, Rudi Altig was represented in a leading group on the stage to Freiburg im Breisgau the next day and took on the yellow jersey for three days .

However, on the first mountain stage Altig lost the jersey to Frenchman Georges Groussard . Groussard was able to maintain the yellow jersey in the Alps and the Pyrenees, but after the second time trial he had to hand it over to Jacques Anquetil . Unlike the previous year , however, Raymond Poulidor , who had won the stage to Luchon , was still within reach and was only a minute behind Anquetil.

On the ascent to Puy de Dôme on the 20th stage, the two French fought a gripping duel as they climbed the mountain side by side. At the end of the stage, Poulidor was able to pull away, but the 14 seconds he managed to get out on Anquetil were not enough to endanger him. With his third time trial victory on the last stage, Anquetil made his tour victory perfect, even if he only had a lead of 55 seconds over Poulidor in the end.

With his fourth Tour win in a row, Anquetil became the first rider to win the Tour de France five times. At the same time he reached the Double Tour - Giro d'Italia in 1964 .

Jan Janssen from the Netherlands won the green jersey after two stage wins . On his last successful tour participation, the Spaniard Federico Bahamontes won the mountain classification just ahead of his compatriot Julio Jiménez . Bahamontes, who won two stages and finished the tour in third, won the mountain classification for the sixth time. Last in the classification was Anatole Novak, a team mate of the winner.

accident

During the 19th stage on July 11th from Bordeaux to Brive, a police supply vehicle crashed on a bridge near Pont de Couze in the Dordogne . Nine people died in the process.
