Brive-la-Gaillarde ( Brive in Occitan ) is a town and municipality with 46,916 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the southwest of France in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It is the seat of a sub-prefecture of the Corrèze department . Until 1919 the city was only called Brive , colloquially it is still called that way. The addition "la Gaillarde" (German roughly: the strong one) can be traced back to the city fortifications , which withstood all sieges over the centuries . The inhabitants call themselves Brivistes.

The city is located in the Brive Basin on the eastern edge of the Aquitaine Basin . The river Corrèze flows through it, which flows into the Vézère at the end of the village .

Tulle , the prefecture of the department, is about 30 kilometers northeast, Limoges about 90 kilometers north and Périgueux about 85 kilometers west.

Neighboring municipalities of Brive-la-Gaillarde are Ussac in the north, Malemort-sur-Corrèze in the northeast, Cosnac in the southeast, Jugeals-Nazareth and Noailles in the south, Chasteaux and Lissac-sur-Couze in the southwest and Saint-Pantaléon-de-Larche in the West.

The Lac du Causse is located about ten kilometers southwest of the city.

history

Brive-la-Gaillarde was called Briva Curretia in ancient times and was a town of the Lemoviks . Here in 584 Gundowald was elected King of Aquitaine .

Economy and Infrastructure

In economic terms, the Brive agglomeration is the second most important location after Limoges in the former Limousin region . Numerous companies in the food and electronics industries have factories and branches here. The city is also the seat of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Briver agglomeration.

The former Brive Airport ( Aérodrome de Brive Laroche ) is three and a half kilometers west of Brive and was replaced by Brive - Vallée de la Dordogne Airport in June 2010 . This is located about 15 kilometers south of the city not far from junction 53 of the A20 autoroute .

To the north of Brive, the Autoroute A20 and Autoroute A89 intersect and partially unite .

Brive train station is a hub in the French rail network. Connections from Paris to Toulouse (via the Les Aubrais-Orléans – Montauban-Ville-Bourbon line and locally also via the Brive-la-Gaillarde – Toulouse-Matabiau line ) and from Bordeaux to Lyon (via the Coutras – Tulle line ) meet here ).
