history
Stratigraphically determined finds from the Mesolithic and remains of dolmens from the Neolithic prove a long history of settlement in the area. While there are no finds from the Bronze and Iron Ages , former brickworks from Roman times seem to prove a continuous settlement of the area. The name comes etymologically from the Gallic- Roman language area, evidenced by the suffix -acum , in Occitan it became ac and denotes a place or court. The community name itself refers to a basic rule named Coznac from the 11th century. The establishment of the Cosnac mansion is now often associated with the rediscovery of the old troglodytic quarry Abri des Roches . The presence of anthropomorphic sculptures suggests that the rock caves were inhabited between the 11th and 13th centuries. A large number of similar caves from the Middle Ages have been rediscovered and excavated in the south of the municipality.
