Meyssac ( Occitan Maissac ) is a French municipality with 1275 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine in Correze on the western edge of the Massif Central . It is the capital of the canton of the same name . The inhabitants call themselves Meyssacois or Meyssacoises .

geography

Tulle , the prefecture of the department, is about 40 kilometers northeast, Brive-la-Gaillarde about 21 kilometers northwest and Cahors about 100 kilometers south.

Neighboring municipalities are Lagleygeolle in the north, Saint-Bazile-de-Meyssac in the east, Saint-Julien-Maumont in the southeast, Chauffour-sur-Vell in the south and Collonges-la-Rouge in the west.

Junction 52 to Autoroute A20 is about 18 kilometers to the northwest.

history

The origins of the community go back to Gallic - Roman owners. Meyssac was later a fortified place and until 1738 belonged to the Turenne vice-county . Trenches and fortification walls with three gates protected the city. Each of the three gates pointed in one direction: to Beaulieu , Martel and Tulle. In the 18th century these fortifications became more and more redundant and the walls were torn down. The resulting free space became a ring boulevard around the place.

economy

The community and the entire region are primarily agricultural. Limousin cattle are mainly bred on an average farm size between 10 and 35 hectares .
