The architecture of the houses in Collonges-la-Rouge shows almost true to the original French rural architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries. In the center of the village is the oldest house in town: the Maison de la Sirène from the 16th century. The church of St. Pierre dates from the 12th century, the Romanesque-limousine tower of which has largely been preserved in its original state.
The church and abbey of Collonges-la-Rouge were built in the 8th century from red sandstone . The name affix "-la-Rouge" testifies to this. The authority was the vice-county of Limoges .
In 1982, the Mayor Charles Ceyrac, who was in office in Collonges from 1977 to 1998, created the Association of The Most Beautiful Villages in France , with the aim of promoting tourism in small rural communities with a considerable historical heritage.
