Church Notre-Dame de l'Assomption

La Bastide-Clairence is a French municipality with 979 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the Bayonne arrondissement and the canton of Pays de Bidache, Amikuze et Ostibarre (until 2015: La Bastide-Clairence ).

Founded in 1288 as a planned medieval town, the Bastide is classified as one of the Plus beaux villages de France ( Most Beautiful Villages in France ).

geography

The place is located in the French Basque Country in the historical province of Basse-Navarre in a very water-rich area on the Joyeuse River (also called Aran ) 42 kilometers east of Hendaye . Neighboring communities are Bardos in the north, Hasparren in the west, Ayherre in the south and Orègue in the east.
