KOffice was a free office software package from KDE , which can be compared to OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Office and which uses the OpenDocument format.

The Office package contains programs for word processing (KWord), a spreadsheet (KSpread), a presentation program (KPresenter), flowcharts (Kivio) and a vector graphics program (Karbon14). Except for KWord, they should operate under a new name from version 2.4.

In the course of splitting the project into KOffice and Calligra Suite , the programs for database ( Kexi ), project management (KPlato) and painting and image processing program ( Krita ) were removed from KOffice and will be part of Calligra from version 2.4 - sometimes with new names developed.

In September 2012, KOffice was discontinued without any formal notice.

Programs

For the components still included up to KOffice 2.3, but now removed, see → Calligra Suite .

Word processing

Screenshot by KWord

KWord is used for word processing and desktop publishing . In addition to running text, frames can also be used in the word processing program to precisely position individual components. A special feature is currently the ability of word processing to not only output PDF documents, but also to read and process them (from version 1.3). Depending on the template, the implementation corresponds more or less to the original.

Spreadsheet

KSpread (in future KCells ) is the spreadsheet of the package. In addition to creating tables, you can also use it to create complex mathematical formulas and statistics .

presentation

With KPresenter (in future Showcase ) presentations can be created with images, effects when changing pages and animations .

drawings

Karbon14 (in future Artwork ) is the vector graphics program from KOffice.

Flowcharts

Kivio is a program for drawing flowcharts . It was originally developed by theKompany and later placed under the GNU General Public License . After this step it became a component of KOffice.

history

The development of KOffice began in 1997 with KPresenter; KWord followed in 1998. In 1999, a former Microsoft employee mentioned KOffice as an example of competing products in the area of office applications in a major civil lawsuit brought by the USA against the group. The first official release came in 2000 as part of KDE 2.0, followed by 1.1 in 2001 and version 1.2 in 2002.

Since KOffice version 1.4 of June 21, 2005, the files created can be saved in the open XML formats of the Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards (OASIS), which are also used by OpenOffice.org or LibreOffice . This should simplify the data exchange . Version 1.4 of KOffice did not yet use the new format by default because the support for it was not yet mature and comprehensive enough. Since version 1.5, released on April 11, 2006, the OpenDocument formats are used as the default setting when saving files.

After about three years of development, the first version 2.0 was released in May 2009, which is based on Qt 4 and KDE Platform 4 and can also run on Windows and macOS . This version has been fundamentally revised, with it being a development and test version that still lacked some functions and that was not yet recommended for end users. Thus version 2.0, similar to the first KDE4 versions, was to be understood as a basic framework and a preview of later versions. Even with version 2.1, the functionality of version 1.6 has not yet been achieved. The first stable version of KOffice 2, which is also suitable for end users, was version 2.2 and was released on May 28, 2010. With this version, Kexi, the integrated database, was included in KOffice 2 after three years of development. Starting with version 2.2, reading support for Microsoft's XML-based file format Office Open XML is included.

Separation of the software collection and individual applications

After a long-running dispute with KWord developer Thomas Zander, the rest of the development team announced on December 6, 2010 that KOffice from version 2.4 onwards would be split into Calligra Suite . Above all, this should reflect the value of the software as a technology platform. Renaming the entire package is also accompanied by a renaming of individual components. KSpread will be renamed Tables , KPresenter to Stage , Kivio to Flow and KPlato to Plan . KWord has been split off into a new application called Words .

The KOffice 2.3 series was maintained by the Calligra team. The development for KOffice 2.4 was practically carried out alone after the spin-off from Thomas Zander, who, in addition to the further development of KWord, had included derivatives from KSpread, KPresenter and Karbon14 under new names in the development branch of KOffice 2.4. All other KOffice 2.3 components have been removed without replacement.

In September 2012 the KOffice development was stopped and the website was replaced by a placeholder. In October 2012, KOffice was removed from the KDE Quality Website Tools. The domain koffice.org is now being forwarded to calligra.org.
