Krita (formerly KImageshop and Krayon ) is a free drawing program from KDE . For some time it was part of the KOffice office suite and is part of the Calligra Suite from version 2.4 . Krita is mainly designed as a painting program, but also contains functions for image editing . Krita is available for Windows , Linux and macOS .

history

After attempts to develop a Qt- based KDE variant of the GIMP had failed, Matthias Ettrich proposed on May 24, 1999 to develop an image processing program from scratch.

In January 2002 the original name KImageshop had to be changed at the insistence of a lawyer - from then on the project was called Krayon. In 2003, development was slow, until a new group of developers came together in October, which continued the development of the program under the name Krita (Swedish for chalk).

On June 21, 2005 the first version of Krita was published together with KOffice 1.4.

Since 2014, the development has been financed through annual donation campaigns on Kickstarter.com , starting with version 2.9. This enabled full-time employees to be employed who work on extensive performance optimizations.

Special features of the program

From version 1.5, Krita supports the color spaces RGB (8 bit, 16 bit and 32 bit), LAB (16 bit), Grayscale (8 bit and 16 bit) and also CMYK (8 bit and 16 bit). Krita also natively supports the OpenEXR format and can be used to process HDR images in this format.
