OpenEXR

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

OpenEXR is a HDR - graphics file format that supports a high color depth.

General

The format was developed as an open format by the US company Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) since 1999 and has been published under an open source license, similar to the BSD license , since 2003 . ILM has specified the format and has files available for a development environment (IDE). It contains a display program for viewing OpenEXR images as well as a program library with which the image format can be processed in self-created programs.

For storing image data OpenEXR used as a base per color channel , a 16- bit - floating point number . The format is directly supported by the CG programming language . OpenEXR also supports 32-bit floating point data as well as 32-bit integer data per pixel ; these formats are intended for the storage of special data such as depth information or object identifications.

The lossless image compression of graphics data is supported, corresponding codecs are included in the IDE. The expandability of the file format to e.g. B. vector graphics or other compression algorithms are planned.
