Henry George Fischer

Henry George Fischer (born May 10, 1923 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † January 11, 2006 in Newtown , Pennsylvania) was an American Egyptologist .

Life

Henry George Fischer graduated from Princeton in 1945 . He then taught English at the American University in Beirut . He then worked as an assistant at the Museum of the University of Pennsylvania . In 1955 he received his doctorate there under Rudolf Anthes . He took part in the university's first expedition to Egypt and then moved to Yale as an assistant professor before finally finding his final position at the Metropolitan Museum .

At the museum, Fischer dealt with the material remains as well as Egyptian literature and music. During his scientific life he dealt with the cultural history of ancient Egypt and the history of the Egyptian provinces. He also presented many publications on this, as well as on Egyptian hieroglyphs and calligraphy . In 1958 he became an assistant and in 1963 an employee of the museum. In 1964 he was appointed head of the Egyptian department. In 1970 he was given a special position as Egyptological curator by a patron . He held this position until his retirement in 1992.

From 1964 to 1970, Fischer headed the American Committee to Save the Abu Simbel Temples . In 1996 he was elected a corresponding member of the British Academy .
