Michel Gyarmathy

Michel Gyarmathy (born January 13, 1908 in Balassagyarmat , † October 31, 1996 ) was a Hungarian director and costume designer.

Life

Michel Gyarmathy's career began at the Király Theater in Budapest . In 1933 he emigrated to Paris and became a director, costume designer and technical director at the world-famous Folies Bergère revue theater , in which Josephine Baker , Maurice Chevalier and Marlène Charell appeared, among others .

The director, known in France as Monsieur Michel , also published poems that repeatedly reminded of his former homeland, Hungary , or of past friends and lovers. ("Mosolyok és Könnyek" / German roughly translated: "Smiles and tears" Paris 1970).

He died on October 31, 1996 and was given an honorary grave in his homeland due to his popularity.

anecdote

Gyarmathy knew how stingy Maurice Chevalier was. For a Chevalier jubilee he went into a small shop to buy an expensive set of champagne bottles and the glasses that went with them, and said to the Jewish owner: “Moishele, I'll give you 20 francs. Give it back to the Chevalier if he should come in here and ask for a bottle deposit. ”No sooner said than done. After a few days, Chevalier was actually in the shop and asked for the deposit.
