Data exchange

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Data exchange is a term from data processing and stands for the forwarding of data between organizations and companies in a purpose-specific standardized form. Although it is mainly used in connection with electronic procedures , it applies regardless of the form of the data and the form of transmission.

Formats and structures of the exchange data (→ exchange formats ) are usually defined under the responsibility of committees, associations or other purpose associations and standardized, for example, for payments , the DTA process the Bundesbank .

The aim is to create, distribute and process this data as uniformly and efficiently as possible, primarily in inter-company contexts. In most cases, the subject of data exchange is data in electronic form - which is also transmitted electronically. However, electronic data is also transported conventionally (e.g. submitting a diskette with transfers to the house bank; source: DTA procedure ). In the literal sense, the forwarding of conventional documents (such as receipts / registration data to or from health insurance companies) is also a 'data exchange' - which is increasingly being replaced by electronic processes; Example see.

Electronic procedures

Here, data exchange stands for the electronic transport of standardized data - which is now 'state of the art'. They are transferred between systems of electronic data processing (EDP) , which are, for. B. Computers , data acquisition devices , other system components or the Internet .

In addition to the data exchange itself, procedures may be required that convert the data into the data format or file format that is suitable for the target system, the target component or the target program . Example: Conversion of the data format ASCII to EBCDIC .

Such functions provide e.g. B. Various file converters are available. Alternatively, the format is adapted in the computer programs involved before and after the data exchange using individually programmed methods or (often found in standard software ) using export functions (before the data exchange) or import functions (after the data exchange) provided by the manufacturer.
