Kexi is a free integrated database management application as part of Calligra , which aims to close the gap between spreadsheets (Calc) and professional database solutions. The program is very similar in operation and behavior to Microsoft Access and quickly provides good results even without professional database knowledge.
history
Work on Kexi began when a lack of free software solutions with a functionality similar to that offered by Microsoft Access, FoxPro , Oracle Forms or FileMaker was recognized . Kexi is part of KOffice, with many contributions from OpenOffice Polska added since 2003. OpenOffice Polska also offers a Kexi demo for Windows systems for download, which up to now could only be offered for a fee. In the future, the Windows version will also be offered free of charge. Kexi also runs on Linux and Unix, on Mac OS X (using Fink) and on Solaris. After version 1.6 of KOffice, Kexi was removed from the software package. In version 2.2, it was included again in the package after a revision of the user interface.
With version 2.4 Kexi will be removed from KOffice and delivered with Calligra Suite instead .
Range of functions
Kexi can access different database servers such as MySQL or PostgreSQL . If SQLite is used, the generated SQLite database can be edited with any other SQLite program. In addition to tables and queries, forms for entering and querying data are also possible. Simple reports are also possible. Small scripts are possible using Python or Ruby . Support for macros is in preparation. Since all database objects, i.e. tables, queries and forms, are saved in a single database file, this facilitates the transfer and exchange of existing databases.
