The municipality belongs to the Bayonne arrondissement and the canton of Pays de Bidache, Amikuze et Ostibarre (until 2015: canton of Saint-Palais ).
The inhabitants are called Arbotiar or Zohotar . The name in the Basque language is accordingly Arboti-Zohota .
geography
Arbouet-Sussaute is located about 55 kilometers east of Bayonne in the French part of the Basque Country . It is part of the Pays de Mixe, a high valley of the Bidouze in the historical region of Lower Navarra .
The community is surrounded by the neighboring communities:
- Autevielle-Saint-Martin-Bideren in the northeast,
- Osserain-Rivareyte in the east,
- Arbérats-Sillègue and Domezain-Berraute in the south as well
- Aïcirits-Camou-Suhast and Gabat to the west.
Arbouet-Sussaute lies in the catchment area of the river Adour and is crossed by tributaries of the Bidouze, which arise in the local area, the Lauhirasse and the Récalde, which partially forms the border with Arbérats-Sillègue. In addition, the Ruisseau de Berd rises in the municipality, which flows into that Lauhirasse , which is a tributary of the season .
history
Between the 11th and 12th centuries, the various provinces of the Basque Country, Lower Navarra, Soule and Béarn were formed . At the intersection of the territories, the boundary stone of Pausasac was in 1395 by Charles III. , King of Navarre, placed in the local area of Sussaute. It is located on a byway of the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela . Another landmark can be seen two hundred meters away. In 1547 he settled a dispute between two shepherds and shows the coat of arms of Navarre on one side and that of Béarn on the opposite side.
Arbouet is mentioned as early as the 12th century with the name Arbute in the copy book of the Abbey of Saint-Jean de Sorde . Other toponyms are: Arbet (1119), Arbut (1125), Arbet (1268), Arboet (1316, 1350, 1413). The history of Arbouet has long been linked to the feudal lords of the same name. Pastor Juantxo Irigoien was at the center of an event during the French Revolution . Because he did not want to submit to the civil constitution of the clergy as decided by the constituent national assembly , he was kidnapped and the church property was confiscated.
Sussaute was first mentioned in 1160 with the name Sosaute . On June 14, 1842, the municipalities of Arbouet and Sussaute were merged.
Arboret is crossed by the route of the former railway line from Saint-Palais to Puyoô . In 1884, the Compagnie des chemins de fer du Midi commenced single-track operation on the 29-kilometer route and stopped in 1984. A striking testimony is the more than 500 meters long, five to six meters wide and more than 20 meters deep trench in the local area that was dug for the route.

Attractions
- Church Saint-Jean-Baptiste of Arbouet, dedicated to John the Baptist . Located in the Romanesque style held Portal is a relic of the simple building from the 12th century. It contrasts with the rest of the current church, which was completely rebuilt around 1860 in the neo-Gothic style. While the portal was carved in the yellow and red sandstone of the region, a light-colored stone was chosen for the rest of the building during the reconstruction and the portal was integrated due to its well-preserved condition. On this occasion, the wall painting in the side chapels and in the choir was done by Xavier Montaut, abbot originally from Oloron , and the stained glass windows by the glass painter Gustave Pierre Dagrant from Bordeaux . A visit to the adjacent cemetery is worthwhile to see the disc-shaped grave crosses characteristic of the Basque Country .
- The church of Saint-Jacques-le-Majeur in Sussaute, dedicated to James the Elder , is in Romanesque style. Over the centuries it has undergone inevitable restorations and alterations, as evidenced by the Gothic style clock on the bell tower. One of the main features of the church is an altarpiece in the Baroque style of the 18th century, as it is found in many churches in the Basque Country. The Council of Trent two centuries earlier allowed pictorial representations of religious personalities and ensured that these altarpieces were developed. Classic forms such as columns and a small blown gable frame a painting with James the Elder, to whom the church is consecrated. It is easy to recognize by its attributes , the pilgrim's staff, the calabash and the scallops . The image of the saint makes a direct reference to the location of Sussaute on the Way of St. James.
