The toll bridge over the river in Osserain was the busiest connection between the historic provinces. The French King Louis XI. and the King of Aragón , John II , met here on April 12, 1462. Fifty years later, John III destroyed the town . of Navarre the bridge to prevent an incursion by Spanish troops. The history of the two former parishes in the following centuries remains unknown. When the territories were reorganized in the French Revolution , they initially belonged to the Canton of Domezain. On August 5, 1842, the municipalities finally merged to form the municipality of Osserain-Rivareyte.

Attractions

  • Parish church of Osserain, dedicated to Maria Magdalena . A flood of the Gave d'Oloron in June 1856 flooded the former parish church, called the ' Chapel of Hôpital' after the district of the same name, l'Hôpital, right on the banks of the season. The parish council decided to build a new church in the center of the parish in order to be better protected against flooding. Due to the instability of the subsoil, the new building was erected between 1857 and 1859 on piles supported by a layer of concrete. The French Emperor Napoleon III. became aware of the natural disaster and gave the parish the altar retable that still adorns the parish church today. The era explains the neo-Gothic style of the building with the pointed helmet of the bell tower over the entrance porch and the pointed arches . The single nave nave is flanked by two side chapels. The church has a painting depicting a portrait of Mary with the baby Jesus. In the scene, Mary presents her son to her relative Elizabeth , who in turn is shown with her son, John the Baptist . He points his finger at Jesus as a sign that he recognizes in him the announced Son of God. The iconographic elements of the dove as a symbol of the Holy Spirit and the Lamb of God are also illustrated in the picture. When the church was rebuilt, it was fitted with glass windows . One of the windows shows Eduard the Confessor in neo-Gothic decor, recognizable by his crown and the scepter of the Kingdom of England . His great veneration, especially by little people, for his generosity and mercy probably led to the decision to adorn the church with his image. A motif with St. Edward is rarely found in the region. Another stained glass window shows a picture of Saint Victoria of Rome with a martyr's palm and sword, the weapon with which she was beheaded. In the course of the Marian apparitions in Lourdes in the 19th century, a stronger focus on female saints developed. This may be a reason for choosing an image of St. Victoria.
  • Saint-Elix Abbey . It was founded in the Middle Ages as one of the first stopovers in the Basque Country for pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela . The abbey also consisted of a hospital and a priory . The tasks consisted of receiving the pilgrims, providing them with accommodation and often accompanying them in the last hours of their lives, as many died due to the toil of the pilgrimage. The district of l'Hôpital developed around the abbey because of the protective effect and prosperity that came from the priory. The current abbey building is presumably a new building from 1835 as a result of damage to the previous building during the French Revolution.
  • Castle of Osserain. It has the characteristic appearance of a 17th century estate, although it has been mentioned as early as the 14th century. This suggests that the castle was destroyed during the Huguenot Wars and then restored, if not rebuilt. Little is known about the landlords of Osserain before the 17th century. The castle belonged to a branch of the respected Gassion family for at least a time. It was never empty and over time it was equipped with stables, dairy farms , vineyards and mills.
