Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to Martin of Tours . The original church, already consecrated to Saint Martin, is mentioned in the scriptures, but its date of construction is unknown. The current church is a new building from the 19th century, which was restored in the 20th century. including the erection of the porch over the western entrance. The long building made of sandstone houses a nave and is closed with a flat apse with an oculus . The sacristy is attached to the south wall. At the western end there is a bell tower with a polygonal helmet covered with slate . A wooden gallery runs around the interior of the nave on three sides with several levels. As is customary in all churches in the Basque Country, the places on the gallery are traditionally reserved for men, since in the Basque Country men and women stay separately during mass . A straight, brick-built external staircase on the south side of this church provides access to the gallery. In the cemetery of Lasse there are several disc-shaped funerary stelae, called Hilarri , which tie in with the pre-Christian tradition and were very popular in the Basque Country between the 16th and 18th centuries. These traditional steles, which are set up against the rising sun, are disc-shaped like the one in Lasse, but can also have a rectangular shape. They are decorated with vegetal, religious or sun ornaments, the exact meaning of which is still a mystery.
  • Etxartea farm. It was probably built in the first half of the 17th century, as evidenced by the entrance gate walled with ashlar stones . As with all farmhouses in the region, this house also has an eskaratz , a central entrance area from which all other rooms in the living and working areas are accessible. The cattle sheds were in the back, the hayloft in the attic. The front facade was originally decorated with a balcony, which has now disappeared. A large fireplace with S-shaped consoles is located inside the house, which is no longer inhabited.
  • Meriategia farm. The name Meriategi was first mentioned in the writings in 1350, but the current farmhouse was built around 1770, as attested by the inscription on a lintel that is now relocated to another building. It may be on the foundations of an older structure. The farmhouse was rebuilt in the 19th and 20th centuries. The living and agricultural work areas are separated, the stable is on the ground floor in the rear part, the living area extends over two floors and the attic is used to store the hay.
  • Aldakurria cider. Sagerno is a sparkling apple wine that has been produced in the Basque Country since the Middle Ages. While their heyday was in the 14th century, cidereries today are mostly found in the historic provinces of Gipuzkoa in Spain, Labourd and Lower Navarra in France. The Aldakurria cider is one of the oldest and best known. Every January the new cider is tasted, combined with a ritual called txotx . The cider bubbling out of the barrel is caught with the help of a glass. The Cidrerie Aldakurria also offers its guests hotel rooms.
