history

The current municipality of Lasserre on a wooded hill between the valleys of the Larcis and Bergons includes the former villages of Lasserre, Langassous and Lous Tilhs. The findings of a fireplace and fragments of brown and white clay pottery at the site of the former Motte of Langassous allowed the dating of the colonization of the region of the 10th or 11th century.

In the 1385 census of the Béarn, only three households were counted in Lasserre and only two in Langassous, and the affiliation of the villages to the Bailliage of the archpriesthood of Lembeye was recorded. Despite the small size, the serfs gathered in Lasserre to pay the annual dues. The village was administered by a manor and a lay monastery at the same time , with the lay monastery disappearing in the course of the Huguenot Wars in the 16th century. The families Sadirac, Samsons, Lons and Crouseilles alternated in the manorial rule of the 16th and 17th centuries.

Toponyms and mentions of Lasserre were:

  • La Serre (13th century, fors de Béarn , 14th century manuscript ),
  • La Serre de Bic-Bilh (1375, contracts of the notary Luntz, sheet 101),
  • La Serra de Siro (1538, 16th century manuscript; Siro is the name of a farm, now in Crouseilles) and
  • Lasserre (1750, map by Cassini ).

Toponyms and mentions of Langassous were:

  • Lanegassos (1385, census in the Béarn),
  • Lane Gassoos (1443, regulations of the Supreme Court of Béarn),
  • Lanagasoos and Langassos (1538 and 1546, respectively, manuscript collection from the 16th to 18th centuries) and
  • Langassau (1750, map by Cassini).

Population development

After a high of around 250 inhabitants in the first half of the 19th century, the number of inhabitants fell back to a level of around 100, which is still held today, with brief recovery phases by the 1920s.

Attractions

Inscription above the entrance to the parish church of Saint-Martin
  • Parish church of Lasserre, dedicated to Martin of Tours . From the Romanesque church of the 12th or 13th century, only a part of the north wall has survived the centuries, which is arranged in a regular masonry bond with stones of medium size. The building was partially rebuilt around 1472, as the year above the southern entrance shows. Like a large part of the churches in Vic-Bilh, this church was also fortified in the 16th century to protect the residents from attacks in the Huguenot Wars . As a result, the church became the property of the Order of Malta , as indicated by the Maltese cross above the entrance portal . It's under a Latin saying in red. The red color is supposed to remind of the blood that was shed through Jesus Christ . In the 18th century extensive renovations were carried out, in particular the expansion of window openings. Lasserre also became a branch of Arrosès , an archpriesthood of Lembeye. Many remarkable pieces of furniture also date from this period , the tabernacle attributed to the artist Jean Brunelo, the floral decorations of the choir and the winged altar with the crucifixion of Christ in the center and Saints Peter and Paul on the sides . Many other items of equipment date from the 17th to 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets. The iron door handle of the church entrance has an exceptional detail. It has the shape of a scallop and refers to the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela . A Way of St. James also leads through the region.
  • Ruins of the Pulit Castle. The castle consisted of a cone-shaped mound and an inner courtyard and was named "motte de Langassous" after the landlords who probably established their fiefs in the 14th century . It is entered as Langassau on the Cassini map in 1750. The former inner courtyard has been converted into a wine cellar, whose winery "Château de la Motte" mainly produces AOC Madiran wines .
