history

On December 30th, the parishes of Ponson-Debat and Pouts merged to form the parish of Ponson-Debat-Pouts.

Sarcophagi and coins from the Gallo-Roman period were found in the area of Pouts in the course of the 19th century and not far from the church's cemetery , evidence of settlement in the area in antiquity .

In the 1385 census, 15 households were counted in the Ponson Debat. The community was subject to the Bailliage of Montaner. Not far from a byway to Santiago de Compostela , there was a monastery in Ponson-Debat that no longer exists today. The associated church was destroyed in the Huguenot Wars in 1569 . At the site of this simple church, traces of a fortification are still visible today. This had an elliptical shape and consisted of two mound castles . The current church in the center of Ponson-Debat is built on a ledge. This is undoubtedly the site of a second fortification that eventually became the community.

Attractions

  • Parish church of Ponson-Debat, dedicated to Orientius , Bishop of Augusta Ausciorum ( Auch ) in the 5th century. The current church is a new building from the 18th century to replace an earlier Romanesque building from the 12th century. The former church may have been destroyed by Protestant troops in the Huguenot Wars as early as 1569 . The single nave nave is flanked by a bell gable with arcades and a semicircular apse , which is supported on the outside by a thick buttress . Two glass windows , works by the glass painter Paul Chalons from the late 19th century, show the motif Salvator mundi and St. Orientius. Other items of equipment date from the 17th to 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Parish church in Pouts, dedicated to John the Baptist . The eastern part of the church was built in the 17th or the first half of the 18th century as parishes flourished with the return of Catholicism after the end of the long Huguenot Wars. Your single nave nave is extended to the west with a bell gable. It has a small hipped roof to protect the bell house. This western part is more recent, as evidenced by the year "1769" on the roof. As with numerous churches in the region, the entrance is on the south side. The framing of the door with ashlar interrupts the uniformity of the facade. The decor of the interior of the church contrasts with the simple exterior of a sacred building, which meets the needs of the faithful to have a place of prayer as close as possible to their houses. The church's silver liturgical objects dating from 1701 to 1706 bear a silver stamp from the city of Bordeaux . This is noteworthy as the French King Louis XIV issued an edict urging everyone to melt down their silver to pay for the cost of the wars. The existence of silverware is an indication of the Béarn's resistance to the French crown at that time. Much of the church's furnishings from the 18th and 19th centuries are registered as national treasures.
