Wilhelm Moritz Heinrich Eduard Freiherr von Romberg (born October 26, 1839 in Salchow ; † April 9, 1917 ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

He was the son of a Prussian major Wilhelm von Romberg and his wife Wilhelmine, née von Below .

Military career

Romberg received his upbringing in his parents' house and in the cadet houses in Kulm and Berlin . During his time in Berlin, he was the personal page of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV , before Romberg was transferred as a second lieutenant to the 2nd Infantry (King) Regiment of the Prussian Army in Stettin on May 8, 1858 . On July 1, 1860, he was transferred to the newly established 2nd Combined Infantry Regiment, from which the 5th Pomeranian Infantry Regiment (No. 42) emerged shortly afterwards . There Romberg acted from mid-June 1861 to the end of June 1866 as adjutant of the 2nd battalion. In this position promoted to prime lieutenant at the beginning of April 1866 , he took part in the fighting at Gitschin during the war against Austria and as a company commander in the battle of Königgrätz in the same year .

After the peace treaty , Romberg served in the 2nd Company and was in command of the 28th Infantry Brigade from October 10, 1868 to November 7, 1870 as an adjutant . After the beginning of the war against France , he took part in this position in the battles at Spichern , Colombey , Gravelotte and Noisseville and the sieges of Metz and Thionville . During the siege of Paris Romberg was promoted to captain on November 8, 1870 and at the same time appointed company commander. He led his company in the battles at Champigny-sur-Marne , Pesmes , Dole , Mouchard , Salins-les-Bains and Pontarlier and was awarded both classes of the Iron Cross for his behavior .

In the autumn of 1874 Romberg took part in the general staff trip of the XV. Army Corps . Subsequently, on October 15, 1874, he was transferred to the 4th Lower Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 51 and as an adjutant to the General Command of VI. Army Corps commanded to Breslau . There Romberg advanced to major at the end of April 1877, only to be transferred to the 6th Brandenburg Infantry Regiment No. 52 on November 12, 1878 as a regular staff officer . From January 18 to March 11, 1881 he acted as battalion commander and then came to Altona in the same function in the 1st Thuringian Infantry Regiment No. 31 . In this position Romberg rose to lieutenant colonel on March 26, 1885 and was transferred to the staff of the 6th East Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 43 on April 14, 1885 . From July 3, 1888 to November 17, 1890, as a colonel , he was in command of the Fusilier Regiment "Graf Roon" (East Prussian) No. 33 in Gumbinnen and then as major general in command of the 5th Infantry Brigade in Stettin. On May 14, 1892, Romberg received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves, for his services in the troop leadership. In approval of his resignation request, he was put up for disposition on December 17, 1892, with the award of the Order of the Crown, 2nd class with a star .

After his departure Romberg lived in Stettin and Wilhelm II gave him the character of Lieutenant General on September 12, 1895 . He was an honorary knight of the Order of St. John .

Romberg was married to Anna von Below. The marriage resulted in four sons and two daughters.
