Portet is located in the river Adour catchment area . One of its tributaries, the Lées , crosses the territory of the commune with its tributaries Boulise and Larcis .

history

The strategically favorable location on a hill between the valleys of the rivers Lées and Larcis led to the settlement of people in prehistoric times, as two fortified camps from that time show. Historians suggest another fortification, which could not be identified by exploring the ground. It should be on the site of the earlier village or church. Ceramics and amphorae have been found on a former building complex from Gallo-Roman times .

In the 12th century, Portet was a fortified place given its location on the border with Gascony . An earlier motte , also called "Justice" ( German  court ), underlines this function. A survey in 1684 confirmed its existence. It was cone-shaped and five meters high, and was surrounded by ditches and a wall. At the height of the mound, the foot of a square timber has been found that could serve as the base of a gallows . This could explain the name of the moth.

The village was initially small in size in the Middle Ages . In the census in 1385, just seven households were counted. Portet was under the Bailliage of Lembeye . Lavielle Castle, the residence of the landlord , dates from the 16th century. It is also the lay monastery .

On July 3, 1944, there was an armed conflict in Portet between German occupation forces and Maquisards , French partisans of the Resistance . 1,200 German soldiers stationed in Pau stormed the village that day in order to dig a rallying point for 160 resistance fighters who have organized themselves here since the Western Allies landed in Normandy. Fifteen maquisards and five civilians were killed in the battle in Portet. The houses in the village were then looted and twenty of them set on fire, including one and the owners. 45 Maquisards were brought to Pau, interrogated there and then executed. An annual event and a memorial plaque commemorates this day.

Attractions

  • Lavielle Castle. The former lay monastery of Portet dates partly from the 16th century, as evidenced by a fireplace with a wide mantle and drapery made of corrugated stones. At that time it belonged to the Abbadie d'Arricau family before it came into the possession of the Baron de Corbères a century later . On the map of Cassini 1750, the castle is entered under the name "La Badie". The castle was enlarged in the 18th century and remodeled again after 1881 when it was sold to the Lavielle family, who gave it their name. The horse stables were also built at this time. The building has two floors and an additional one in the two corner pavilions . It is largely made of sandstone , quarry stone and bricks in a mixed masonry bond and plaster. The elongated roof areas are covered with slate and hollow tiles. The castle was renovated by its owners in the first years after 2000 and is not open to the public.
