Aydie Town Hall

Aydie is a French municipality with 140 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Terres des Luys et Coteaux du Vic-Bilh (until 2015: canton Garlin ).

The name in the Gascognic language is Aidia .

geography

Aydie is located about 50 kilometers northeast of Pau in the Vic-Bilh des Béarns region on the northern border area of the department with the neighboring departments of Gers and Hautes-Pyrénées .

The place is surrounded by the neighboring communities:

Viella
(Gers)
Aubous Neighboring communities Saint-Lanne
(Hautes-Pyrénées)
Mont-Disse Arrosès

Aydie is located in the river Adour basin . One of its tributaries, the Saget, flows to a large extent on the eastern municipal boundary. The Bach Boutigué, a tributary of the Saget, flows into this on the northeastern edge of the village.

history

In prehistory , settlements were established in geographically preferred locations. Finds of stone axes on the hardly recognizable remains of an earlier camp show that this was also the case with Aydie, given its location on a hill between the rivers Larcis and Saget. Another camp, called "Caesar's camp", indicates a settlement in the Gallo-Roman period .

In 1385, Aydie was mentioned as Aidie in a census . 25 households were counted and it was noted that the village is in the Bailliage of Lembeye . In another census in 1542, the place appears as Aydia , in 1675 as Ayrie .

In the Middle Ages , a fiefdom was established in the hamlet of Herm, depending on the Viscount of Béarn. It initially belonged to the de Sainte-Colome family, from 1624 until the French Revolution to the de Capdeville family. A look at the Carte de Cassini , which was created in 1750, shows a castle owned by the latter, which no longer exists today.

The Romanesque church from the 11th century and the Peyré Castle, however, have outlasted the times.

Population development

After the peak of 345 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century, the number has fallen to just over a third of the maximum to this day.

Church Saint-Jean-Baptiste
  • Church dedicated to John the Baptist . The nave and the semicircular apse date from the 11th century. The bell gable was placed on the western part of the building in the 16th century. It is supported by two thick buttresses and broken through by a roofed, arched door. In the 18th century the side aisle and the porch of the entrance were added. Restoration work began in the 19th century, but was never completed. The interior of the church is richly furnished with many objects that are registered as national cultural assets. The barrel vault is painted with star-shaped cassettes . The monstrance is a gift from Napoleon III. from 1868. An altarpiece each adorns the choir and the aisle. The former shows a painting depicting Jesus Christ on the cross between Mary , the apostle John, and Mary Magdalene . The view of the reredos in the aisle, however, falls on a statue with Mary and her baby Jesus on her left arm. In her right hand she holds a spindle , Jesus holds a globe in his left hand. The statue stands in front of a blue starry sky, framed by Corinthian columns and symbolizes the queen of heaven and earth. Church records show the purchase in 1839 or 1840. Two paintings depict scenes from the life of John the Baptist. The first picture is a copy from the 18th century of the painting “John the Baptist in the Desert” by Giovanni Battista Gaulli , the original of which is kept in the Louvre . The second picture shows the baptism of Jesus by John. Again, this is an 18th century copy of a painting by the French painter Pierre Mignard , which can be seen in the church of Saint-Jean-du-Marché in his home town of Troyes .
  • Peyré Castle. It bears the name of a resident who is well known in France, the writer Joseph Peyré, who was born in Aydie and lived in the house for a while. The castle was built in 1895 by order of a Paris magistrate named Commassous. In addition to the main building with steep, slate-covered tent roofs, the palace complex includes a barn , a chicken coop, a pigsty, a coach house and a fish pond.
