history

The community developed in two places on two different hills. The first foundation took place on a terrace on a hill above the valley of the Luy de France, on the site of today's Lacarrère district. Between the 9th and 11th centuries, a circular motte surrounded by palisades and ditches filled with water underlined the strategic location. Not far away, another artificial mound protected the church and the cemetery, which were surrounded by a wall. The census in Béarn in 1385 counted 25 houses in Vignes, a large number of which were inhabited by Cagots , a group of people who discriminated in Spain and France from the 13th to well into the 19th century for reasons still unknown and was largely excluded from social life. However, it seems that the integration in Vignes was more successful than in other municipalities. The village belonged to the Bailliage of Pau. It remained an enclave of the Vicomté of Béarn in the Vicomté of Louvigny until the reorganization of the territories during the French Revolution . The center of the community with the town hall, school and church was moved to another hill on the newly built Route départementale 32 at the beginning of the 20th century .

Toponyms and mentions of Vignes were:

  • Binhe (1379),
  • Vinhes (1385, census in the Béarn),
  • Binhes (1513, notaries from Garos ) and
  • Vignes (1750, 1793 and 1801, map from Cassini , Notice Communale or Bulletin des lois ).

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 515 in the first half of the 19th century. Subsequently, the size of the community fell to around 215 by the 1940s, before a period of recovery began that is still ongoing.
