The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Terres des Luys et Coteaux du Vic-Bilh (until 2015: canton Thèze ).

geography

Claracq is located about 30 km north of Pau on the northeastern edge of the department in the Vic-Bilh region of Gascogni in the historical province of Béarn .

The place is surrounded by the neighboring communities:

Boueilh-Boueilho-Lasque Ribarrouy
Garlède-Mondebat
Lalonquette
Neighboring communities Taron-Sadirac-Vlichenave
Miossens-Lanusse Carrère Mouhous

Claracq is located in the catchment area of the Adour River . One of its tributaries, the Gabas , marks the western boundary of the municipality with Garlède-Mondebat, Lalonquette and Miossens-Lanusse. A tributary of the Gabas, the Tourniquet, marks a certain part of the northern border to the neighboring municipality of Boueilh-Boueilho-Lasque. A tributary of the Lées , the Gabassot, partially forms the eastern border with the neighboring communities of Taron-Sadirac-Vielleave, Mouhous and Carrère. Another tributary of the Adour, the Bahus , rises in the area of the municipality.

history

Claracq is at the crossroads of two paths, one of which has existed since prehistory . Excavations on these roads led to the discovery of six barrows that prove settlement before the Gallo-Roman times . The community was subsequently built on the site of a Gallo-Roman estate. The origin of the name is composed of the Latin name Clarus and the suffix -acum , which together means "estate of Clarus".

Toponyms and mentions were subsequently:

Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted the coverage of 47 households in the census of 1385 and the fact that the village was part of the Bailliage of Pau. In the 16th century the parish was part of the Baronate of Coarraze . 1674 sold Henri d'Albret-Miossens the basic rule of Pierre de Brugelles, in the 18th century it was owned by the Hiton family. On the map of Cassini 1750, the municipality is entered as Clarac . Jean-Marie de Hiton, former musketeer , then major and inspector of the "Bearner Troupe" stated in the 1752 census that he owned a castle, a mill and a half of the tithe . The other half belonged to the pastor and the cathedral chapter of Lescar at the time .

Around twelve Cagot families lived in the community, members of a group of people who were discriminated against in Spain and France from the 13th to well into the 19th century and who were largely excluded from social life. They lived separately from the other residents, and went into the Claracq Weber profession after.

From 1904 to 1932 a narrow-gauge railway between Pau and Aire-sur-l'Adour was operated by the Compagnie du Chemin de fer Pau-Oloron-Mauléon . Claracq had a train station and thus an important stop for steam-powered trains on this route.

Population development

After the highest number of inhabitants in the first half of the 19th century with over 450 inhabitants, the number fell by around 60% during brief phases of recovery until 1990 and has increased again since then.

Attractions

Museums

  • Gallo-Roman Museum. The exhibits in the museum show the public, with the help of the finds from excavations in the neighboring community of Lalonquette, life in a Gallo-Roman villa that was inhabited in the first five centuries of our era. The estate must have a certain importance, because the total area is around two hectares. It was conveniently located not far from the Roman road from Bordeaux to Saragossa . The permanent exhibition is thematically structured (coins, ceramics, jewelery, architecture, mosaics ) and presented museographically (panels, models, archaeological objects, interactive terminals). In addition to the exhibition, there are special activities aimed at children, during which they can make Gallo-Roman objects under supervision in workshops and take them home.

Buildings

  • Local church, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary . The original structure probably dates back to the 11th century, its portal and aisle are from the end of the 16th or the beginning of the 17th century. The bell tower was added to the nave in the 19th century. Above the wooden door of the entrance portal, the figure of a cow, the heraldic animal of the Béarn, emerges from the garment as a relief . Above the portal there is a niche in the wall in which a statue of the Virgin Mary is placed. A painting in the interior of the church measuring 1.93 m × 1.48 m shows the Annunciation , the announcement of divine motherhood to Mary by the Archangel Gabriel , a work by Emma Cornélie Wyatt de Vivefay from 1865. It is after the Painting by Giovanni Battista Salvi , called Sassoferrato, of the Louvre Museum , which in turn is an interpretation of the painting by Federico Barocci from the Vatican Pinacoteca . The painting was ordered from the Minister de la maison de l'empereur by the municipality in 1864 . Another painting measuring 2.02 x 1.36 m shows Christ crucified with Mary Magdalene at his feet. As in sacred art, she is traditionally portrayed with long, loose hair, according to the idea of prostitutes in Palestine at that time . In similar depictions, unlike here, Mary Magdalene holds a vase with perfume in her hand to embalm the corpse . This painting is the work of the painter Victor Venat from the second half of the 19th century.
  • Claracq Castle. It was the seat of the landlord of Claracq from at least the 16th century. In the 19th century the castle was rebuilt in the same place and acquired its current appearance.
