Riupeyrous is a French municipality with 214 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Pays de Morlaàs et du Montanérès (until 2015: canton of Morlaàs ).

The name in the Gascognischen language is Riupeirós . The origin of the name comes from the Gascognischen words pèira ( German  stone ) and (ar) riu ( German  Bach ) and thus alludes to the Gabas , which flows through the area of ​​the municipality.

history

At one point on the territory of the municipality where an old path of transhumance passes are burial mounds were found, from the early history dating. The road is called the "Route of Saint-Pé" and led from Pontacq to Garlin . One of the barrows contained a black vase and a fragment of a bronze necklace or bracelet . The other graves contained circles of pebbles, black urns, and a fragment of a human skull.

Riupeyrous was first mentioned in the records in 1336. In the 1385 census of the Béarn, twelve households were counted. The village belonged to the Bailliage of Pau. Over the centuries, several noble families owned the manor . It was the Sollu and Laroque families in the 17th century, followed by the Capdeville and d'Auga families. In 1728 the owner was Samuel Ignace de Casenave, an adviser to the Parliament of Navarre . In the following years it came into the hands of the Ducasse family. In the 19th century, Riupeyrous was known for its fox hunts, which were particularly popular with the English who spent their summer holidays in Pau.

Population development

After the population peaked at around 340 in the middle of the 19th century, the number fell to around 130 during short recovery phases by the 1960s. In the period that followed, a recovery phase alternated with a stagnation phase. Since the turn of the millennium, a moderate growth phase has been recorded again.

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to Maria Magdalena . It was built in the second half of the 12th century. The nave has a main aisle and a side aisle, which was added after 1833. A semicircular apse completes the long building. A circular Christ monogram with a diameter of 55 cm can be seen on the tympanum of the entrance portal . This shows the letters Rho ("P") and Chi ("X") in the traditional way . An “S” for “Salvator” ( German savior ) is looped around the foot of the Rho. Alpha and Omega hang on loops on the upper arms of the chi. Inside, items from the 17th to 19th centuries are kept that are registered as national cultural assets.
