Saubole is a French municipality with 137 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Pays de Morlaàs et du Montanérès (until 2015: canton of Morlaàs ).

The name of the municipality is Sauvòla in the Gascon language .

The name is a derivation of the Gascognischen word selvola ( German  place where there is a forest ).

Saubole is located about 25 km east of Pau in the historical province of Béarn on the eastern edge of the department and borders in the northeast and in the southeast on enclaves of the neighboring department Hautes-Pyrénées .

history

The village is first mentioned in the scriptures in the 13th century, but settlement of the area took place long before that, as shown by numerous barrows that have been leveled today. In the Middle Ages , the area of ​​today's municipality was crossed by pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela . In the 1385 census of the Béarn, seven households were counted in Saubole and the village was part of the Bailliage of Montaner . Obviously the village did not develop much until 1570, when only five or six houses were counted. The landlord was at this time the commander of the Benedictine abbey of Saint-Lézer near Tarbes .

Population development

The community reached an initial high of its size with around 145 inhabitants in the first half of the 19th century. As a result, the population was reduced to 75 with short recovery phases up to the 1930s. Then a growth phase began until the 1960s. During this time around 100 people lived in the community. Until the turn of the millennium, the size of the community stagnated until a strong growth set in, which continues today.
