geography

Saint-Lézer is located 17 kilometers north of Tarbes (capital of the Hautes-Pyrénées department ) and about three kilometers southwest of Vic-en-Bigorre . The village overlooks the Adour valley and overlooks the Pyrenees .

history

Settled by the Celtiberians and fortified with an oppidum even before the turn of the ages , it became the capital of Bigorre in Gallo-Roman times with a Castrum Bigorra as a fortress (today accessible via an archaeological path).

Around the year 1000 n. Chr. The Count of Bigorre built at the same place a medieval castle and its residence, Castelbieilh called.

Together with the Bishop of Bigorre , he also founded a monastery in the 11th century, the Priory of Saint-Lézer .

Attractions

  • The church consecrated to Saint-Lézer , built in a wing of the former monastery of the Benedictine order , the Priory of Saint-Lézer . The monastery was founded at the beginning of the 11th century. In the course of the French Revolution , the monastery was sold to Bertrand Barère as a national property and was torn down stone by stone. The monastery has an older history, as there was already an abbey in the same place in the 6th century, which was destroyed by the Vikings in the 8th century.
  • Archaeological path of Castrum Bigorra with remains of Gallo-Roman walls and remains of the medieval castle fortress. The path is lovingly maintained by the "Association des Amis de la Bigorra" and is modeled with many information boards.
  • A mill and the former sawmill of the monastery from the 18th century.
