Toponymy

The Occitan name of the municipality is Ariès. The origin of the place name Aries is unclear. It could have the Etymon (h) arri ( German  for stone, rock ) from the Basque language , a derivation from the Latin ripa ( German  river bank ) or come from a proper name Aris . All of these theories encounter problems of phonetics and have no evidence in the scriptures. The place name Espénan, on the other hand, has its origin in the Latinized proper name Hispanius and the suffix -anum (= country estate of Spanius).

Toponyms and mentions of Aries and Espénan were:

  • Capellanus d'Aries et de Spenano (1383–1384, Procuration Auch ),
  • Capellanus de Aries et Spenano (1405, tax register also),
  • de Ries (15th century, tax register Auch),
  • de Spanhano (15th century, tax register also),
  • Aries and Espenan (1750, map by Cassini ),
  • Aries and Espenau (1793 and 1801, Notice Communale and Bulletin des lois, respectively ).
