Toponymy

The Occitan name of the community is Vernadèth Dessús. The first part of the name has its origin in Gascognischen vèrn ( German  alder ) with a suffix -etam and a diminishing suffix -èth , which emerged from the Latin suffix -ellum . It can therefore be translated as "small alder forest". The second part of the name is a derivation of the Gascognischen dessús ("south" in relation to Bernadets-Debat).

A nickname of the residents of the community is Eths abisma-bròia ( German,  the fat eaters of the Bròia ). The Bròia is a traditionally prepared soup made from corn bread ( devath ) in Bigorre . Another nickname is Eths carboèrs ( German  die Köhler ), an indication that in earlier times almost all residents of the community were wood hewers and charcoal burners .
