Mascaras ( Occitan Mascarans ) is a southern French municipality with 353 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the center of the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitania region .

Location and climate

The municipality of Mascaras is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees at an altitude of about 390  m . The closest city, Tarbes, is a good 12 km northwest. The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 825 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

Because by the phylloxera crisis in the wine sector and the increasing mechanization of agriculture caused rural exodus , the population of the municipality continuously declined since the early 20th century. Because of its proximity to the Tarbes metropolitan area, it has increased slightly since the 1980s.

The community is almost exclusively agriculturally oriented.

history

The old place name Maschara is mentioned for the first time in 1296. From the Middle Ages until the beginning of the French Revolution , the municipality was part of the historic Bigorre province .

Attractions

The Église Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul , which is surrounded by the local cemetery and built in the late 19th century on the site of a previous medieval building, is dedicated to the Apostles Peter and Paul .
