Bazillac is a French commune with 347 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Tarbes and the canton of Val d'Adour-Rustan-Madiranais (until 2015: canton of Rabastens-de-Bigorre ).
The inhabitants are called Bazillacois and Bazillacoises .
geography
Bazillac is located about 23 kilometers north of Tarbes in its catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) in the historic county of Bigorre on the northern edge of the department.

Bazillac is in the catchment area of the river Adour at its right bank.
In addition, tributaries of the Canal d'Alaric irrigate the territory of the municipality:
- the Aule and its tributary,
- the Ruisseau l'Ayguevive, and
- the Ruisseau de Larcis and its tributary,
- the Ruisseau l'Échéou.
history
The community has been settled since Gallo-Roman times , as evidenced by parts of ceramics , roof tiles and remains of dwellings on site. Until 1750 there was a castle belonging to the Barons of Bazillac. Today the school building stands at this point. A brick building replaced the manor house of the Florence family, who were vassals of the Bazillac , in the 19th century .
Toponymy
The Occitan name of the community is Baselhac. It comes from the Latin proper name Basilius and the suffix -acum, from which the Gascognic suffix -ac arose ("Basilius's estate" in antiquity ).

Population development
After the beginning of the records, the population rose to a high of 550 by the first half of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community decreased with short recovery phases until after the Second World War to 320 inhabitants, before it has since grown to a level of around 340 inhabitants stabilized.
