Gayan is a French commune with 277 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Tarbes and the canton of Vic-en-Bigorre (until 2015: canton Bordères-sur-l'Échez ).

The inhabitants are called Gayanais and Gayanaises .

geography

Gayan is located about nine kilometers north of Tarbes in its catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) in the historic province of Bigorre on the western edge of the department.

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of 320 by the middle of the 19th century. Subsequently, the size of the community decreased to around 175 with brief recovery periods until the 1920s, before a longer period of oscillating growth began continues to this day.
