Lagarde is a French commune with 524 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Tarbes and the canton of Vic-en-Bigorre (until 2015: canton Bordères-sur-l'Échez ).

The inhabitants are called Lagardéens and Lagardéennes .

geography

Lagarde is located about eight kilometers north-northwest of Tarbes in its catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) in the historic province of Bigorre on the western edge of the department.

Lagarde is surrounded by the five neighboring communities:

Lagarde lies in the catchment area of the Adour River .

The Souy , a tributary of the Échez , forms the natural border with the neighboring municipality of Gayan to the east. The Arriouet is a tributary of the Souy and has its source in the municipality of Lagarde.

The Géline , a tributary of the Canal de Luzerte, forms the natural border with the neighboring municipality of Tarasteix to the west.

Toponymy

The Occitan name of the municipality is La Garda. It comes from the Occitan garda , which is a derivation from the Germanic warte . The name of the hamlet Castèth-Crabèr could indicate that there was an oppidum at this point .

The nickname of the residents of the community is Los picards ( German  the mosquitoes ) in the sense of "sensitive" and "blown away".

Population development

After records began, the population rose to an initial high of around 205 by the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to around 110 during short recovery phases until after the Second World War , before a longer phase with at times strong growth began, which continues to this day and far exceeds the previous highs.
