history

In 1009 the Benedictine monastery Saint-Orens was built on a Way of St. James . The copial book of the monastery names the Viscount von Montaner Odon-Dat as the founder . Numerous donations made her wealthy in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, so that she had a considerable estate at the beginning of the thirteenth century. In the middle of the same century, the Benedictines founded the bastide of Larreule south at the foot of the monastery at the same time as those of Uzan and Mazerolles . This concentrated the widely dispersed population and gave them protection. In 1385 Larreule had 32 households, in 1549 there were still 31 households. The monastery was destroyed in the Huguenot Wars in 1569 by Protestant troops led by Gabriel de Lorges , Count of Montgomery, and was abandoned by the monks in 1740 . At the beginning of the 19th century, the monastic buildings were demolished and parts were given to American museums. The monastery church is now the parish church of the community.

Saint-Orens parish church

The former monastery church has been inscribed as a Monument historique since August 26, 1994 . A special feature is its fortified polygonal bell tower with its height of about 20 meters. On its ground floor there are seven Romanesque capitals from the 12th century, which may belong to the former chapter house of the monastery. The earlier Gothic capitals, on the other hand, are widely scattered. One is in the church below the stoup , one in the transept , and others in the Massey Museum in Tarbes, New York City, and Cleveland .

Parabère castle ruins

Parabère Castle was owned by the Baudéan-Parabère family, who distinguished themselves in the wars of the 16th century. They left in the 18th century to go to the court at Versailles . Today's remains attest to numerous alterations and do not appear to be older than the 15th century.

It is located on the road to Monségur, the former Way of St. James. According to legend, Saint Esselin, Bishop of Sutri, was on a pilgrimage .
