Hitte ( Occitan Hita ) is a French commune with 163 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitania region (until 2015 Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Tarbes and since 2018 to the Haute-Bigorre municipal association . The inhabitants are called Hittois .

geography

The municipality of Hitte is located in the north of the Bigorre landscape in the foothills of the Pyrenees , about 15 kilometers southeast of the departmental capital Tarbes and 32 kilometers east-northeast of Lourdes . The 2.91 km² municipal area is bordered to the west by the Arrêt-Darré river . Hitte is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Oueilloux in the northeast, Luc in the east, Orignac in the south, vielle-Adour in the southwest, Bernac-Dessus in the west and Barbazan-Dessus and Fréchou-Fréchet in the northwest.

Place name

In the 14th century the place name appeared for the first time as De Fita (1300, 1313 and 1379 in Latin and Gascon language). In 1429 the variations Fite, Lafite and Fita appear. In the late 18th century, the place was called Hitte on a Cassini map . At the time the church was founded in 1793, the place was called Hille for a short time until 1801 . Since then, the spelling Hitte , which is still used today, has been used .

Economy and Infrastructure

Hitte has a rural character. There are 15 farms in the municipality (cereal cultivation, sheep, goat and cattle breeding, dairy farming).

The municipality of Hitte has good transport connections. In Tournay , ten kilometers away, there are connections to the trunk road network and the A64 autoroute . Tournay is also the closest train station - on the Toulouse – Bayonne railway line .
