Barbazan-Dessus is a French commune with 165 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Tarbes and the canton of La Vallée de l'Arros et des Baïses (until 2015: canton of Tournay ).

The inhabitants are called Barbazanais and Barbazanaises .

Barbazan-Dessus is located about nine kilometers southeast of Tarbes in its catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) in the historic county of Bigorre .

Barbazan-Dessus lies in the catchment area of the Adour River .

The Arrêt-Darré , a tributary of the Arros , forms the natural border with the neighboring municipality of Hitte to the east. The Lassarenc, a tributary of the Arrêt-Darré, has its source in the municipality. The Echéoux also rises in Barbazan-Dessus, but flows into the Canal d'Alaric in the neighboring municipality.

Toponymy

The Occitan name of the community is Barbadan Dessús. The first part of the name has its origin from an estate in ancient times . It is derived from the Latin proper name Barbatius with the suffix -anum ("Landgut des Barbatius"). The addition Dessus means "located south" in relation to Barbazan-Debat .

The nickname of the community is Los lobatèrs ( German  the wolf hunters ). There are also two wolves in the municipality's coat of arms.

Population development

After the records began, the population rose to a peak of around 315 by the middle of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 110 inhabitants during short recovery phases until the 1960s, before a phase of growth began. which continues to this day.

Personalities

Arnault Guilhem de Barbazan , born around 1360 possibly at his castle in Barbazan-Dessus, died in 1431 in Vaudoncourt in what is now the Vosges department , was Seigneur von Barbazan, adviser and chamberlain to the French King Charles VII and fought on the side of the French crown in the Hundred Years War . The castle was destroyed during the French Revolution .
