geography
The municipality of Hourc is located in the north of the Bigorre landscape in the foothills of the Pyrenees , about twelve kilometers east of the departmental capital, Tarbes . The municipal area of just two square kilometers is bordered to the east by the Estéous River , a tributary of the Adour . Place name
In 1313, the place name first appeared in Latin as De Forqueto . In 1342 the name De Furno appeared. 1429 was attributed Deu Forc or Gascon Lo Forc . In 1738 the parish was named Paroisse du Hourc in a parish register . About Lehourc (1790) and Le Hourc on a Cassini map from the late 18th century, the spelling of the place name at the time the church was founded in 1793 developed into Hourc, which is still used today . It is assumed that the gas cognic horc arose from the Latin furcum for holt, forest .
