Lafitole is a French commune with 477 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Tarbes and the canton of Val d'Adour-Rustan-Madiranais (until 2015: canton of Maubourguet ).

The inhabitants are called Lafitolais and Lafitolaises .

Lafitole is located about 24 kilometers north of Tarbes in the Rivière-Basse natural landscape on the north-western edge of the department

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of 1,020 by the first half of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell with short recovery phases until the 1990s to a low of around 360 inhabitants before a growth phase began.

Personalities

Jean Desbons, born on February 1, 1891 in Lafitole, died on November 19, 1967 in Paris , was a lawyer and French politician. He was awarded the Croix de guerre 1914-1918 for his services in the First World War , and the Médaille des évadés for his escape after his capture . He also received the Officer's Order of the Legion of Honor . Jean Desbons was during the Third French Republic from April 22, 1928 to May 31, 1932 and from May 3, 1936 to 31, 1942 a member of the département in the National Assembly . On July 10, 1940, he voted for the general authorization in favor of Philippe Pétain , which effectively ended the Third French Republic. For this reason, after the end of the Second World War, he no longer obtained a political mandate.
