Marquerie ( Occitan Marqueria ) is a town in the south of France and a municipality with only 80 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the center of the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitania region .

Location and climate

The municipality of Marquerie is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees at an altitude of about 300  m . The nearest town, Tarbes , is just under 14 km southwest. The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 810 mm / year) falls mainly in the winter half-year.

Because by the phylloxera crisis in the wine sector and the increasing mechanization of agriculture caused rural exodus , the population of the municipality continuously declined since the early 20th century. The slight increase in population since the 1990s is related to the relative proximity to Greater Tarbes.

history

The place name Marcharie is mentioned for the first time around 1140. From the Middle Ages until the beginning of the French Revolution , the municipality was part of the historic Bigorre province .

Attractions

The Église Saint-Pierre , which is surrounded by the local cemetery and built at the end of the 18th century on the site of a previous medieval building, is dedicated to the Apostle Peter . The bell tower (clocher) closes with a - rather rare in the Pyrenees - hood at the top; On top of it is a cube with sound openings and a pyramid roof .
