Marsac ( Occitan Marçac ) is a town in the south of France and a municipality with 224 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the center of the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitania region .

Location and climate

The municipality of Marsac is located on the Adour River in the foothills of the Pyrenees at an altitude of approximately 245  m . The city of Tarbes is just eight miles south. The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 825 mm / year) falls over the year.

Because by the phylloxera crisis in the wine sector and the increasing mechanization of agriculture caused rural exodus , the population of the municipality continuously declined since the early 20th century. The slight increase in population since the 1990s is related to the relative proximity to Greater Tarbes.

history

The place name Marzag was first mentioned in the 12th century. From the Middle Ages until the beginning of the French Revolution , the municipality was part of the historic Bigorre province .

Attractions

The Église Saint-André , which is surrounded by the local cemetery and built at the end of the 19th century on the site of a previous medieval building, is dedicated to the Apostle Andreas . The bell tower (clocher) closes with a pointed helmet at the top. The interior of the church still retains parts of the baroque furnishings of the previous building.
