Tarasteix ( Occitan : Tarastèish ) is a French commune with 266 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitania region (until 2015 Midi-Pyrénées ). It belongs to the Arrondissement of Tarbes and to the Adour Madiran community association founded in 2016 .

Tarasteix is ​​located in the north of the Bigorre landscape , about 15 kilometers northwest of Tarbes and 37 kilometers east of Pau . The municipality extends along the three rivers Lis , Barmale and Géline , which flow parallel in a south-north direction , the latter marking the eastern municipal boundary . The rivers drain to the Échez in the Adour catchment area . The terrain in the municipality is hilly and characterized by a mixture of fields, meadows and forests. The villages of Bernatou, Jacou, Marque dessus, Couloumé, Matiou, Chibor, Pratou, Marquet and Cambau as well as numerous small hamlets and individual farms belong to Tarasteix . Tarasteix is ​​surrounded by the neighboring communities of Montaner in the north, Siarrouy in the northeast, Lagarde in the east, Oroix in the south, Ponson-Dessus in the west and Ponson-Debat-Pouts in the northwest.

Place name

The village first appears in 1342 as de Tarrastezio in a Latin document. The place name developed over de Tarastexio (Latin, 1379), Teresteix and Terestex (1429) and Taratteix (late 18th century) to Tarasteix, which has been used since 1793 and is still in use today .
