Monfaucon is a town in the south of France and a municipality with 210 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the north of the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitania region .

Location and climate

The municipality of Monfaucon is located in the foothills of the Pyrenees at an altitude of around 260  m . The city of Tarbes is about 28 km south. The climate is temperate to warm; Rain (approx. 830 mm / year) falls over the year.

Because by the phylloxera crisis in the wine sector and the increasing mechanization of agriculture caused rural exodus , the population of the municipality in the 20th century was rapidly declining. The slight increase in population in the years after 2000 is related to the relative proximity to Greater Tarbes.

history

The place name Mont Faucoo is first mentioned in 1285. From the Middle Ages until the beginning of the French Revolution , the municipality was part of the historic Bigorre province .

Attractions

  • The Église de l'Assomption , which is surrounded by the local cemetery and built at the end of the 19th century on the site of a previous medieval building, is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary . The church has a south porch, the purpose of which is unclear.
  • On the outskirts there is an old wash house ( lavoir ) .
