Betpouy is a French commune with 78 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Tarbes and the canton of Les Coteaux (until 2015: canton Castelnau-Magnoac ).

The inhabitants are called Betpouyens and Betpouyennes .

Betpouy is located about 32 kilometers east of Tarbes in the historic province of Quatre-Vallées on the northeastern edge of the department.

Betpouy lies in the catchment area of the Garonne River .

The Petite Baïse , a tributary of the Baïse , crosses the area of the municipality as does its tributary, the Sole , also called Solle, and its tributary, the Ruisseau de Higué.

Toponymy

The Occitan name of the community is Bèthpoi. It has its origin in the Gascognischen words bèth ( German beautiful, good ) and poi ( German hill ).

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 230 by the middle of the 19th century. In the period that followed, the size of the community fell to 65 inhabitants during short recovery phases until the 1970s, before increasing slightly and since the 1990s Years at a level of around 75 inhabitants.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste

It contains some items of equipment that have been inscribed as Monument historique since May 23, 2002 :

the main altar with tabernacle and altarpiece from the 17th and 18th centuries. The curved door of the polychrome tabernacle is adorned with a chalice , which is framed by falling leaves and angel heads . At the corners there are columns and on the two wings there are bas-reliefs depicting John the Baptist , the patron saint of the church on the left and a bishop on the right. Above the balustrade there is a niche with a statue of Mary with baby Jesus
a statue made of gilded wood from the late 18th century with Mary and the baby Jesus
a seat of the celebrant made of wood with stick ornamentation and waxed from the 17th century
the oil painting of the altarpiece from the 17th century with the crucifixion scene with Mary and John the Baptist on both sides of the cross.
