Bernac-Dessus is a French commune with 294 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Occitanie region (before 2016: Midi-Pyrénées ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Tarbes and the canton of Moyen-Adour (until 2015: canton of Séméac ).

Bernac-Dessus is located about nine kilometers southeast of Tarbes in its catchment area ( Aire urbaine ) in the historic county of Bigorre .

Bernac-Dessus lies in the catchment area of the Adour River .

The Canal d'Alaric , one of its tributaries, crosses the territory of the commune together with its tributary, the Echéoux, which has its source in Bernac-Dessus.

The Arrêt-Darré , a tributary of the Arros , marks the natural border with the neighboring municipality of Hitte to the east. The Baquarat, one of its tributaries, partially flows along the border with the neighboring municipality of vielle-Adour to the south, before flowing into the Arrêt-Darré.

In addition, the municipality is irrigated by the Ruisseau de Layet.

Toponymy

The Occitan name of the municipality is Bernac Dessús. The first part of the name comes from a Gallo-Roman proper name Brennus , a Germanic proper name Bernus or a Gallic proper name Vernus or Verno and the suffix -acum ("Landgut des Brennus / Bernus / Vernus / Verno"). The second part of the name is a derivation of the Gascognischen dessús ("south" in relation to Bernac-Debat).

Population development

After records began, the population rose to a peak of around 505 by the middle of the 19th century. In the following period, the size of the community fell to around 180 inhabitants with brief recovery phases up to the 1960s, before a growth phase began that lasted up to The millennium lasted and the size increased to 325 inhabitants. Since then the population of the municipality has stagnated.
